Google launches Pics, an AI-powered design tool competing with Canva
Google's new Pics tool lets Workspace users and AI Pro subscribers create visuals through text prompts rather than manual design work.
TechCrunch — AI
Google is making a push into the creative design space with Pics, a fresh image creation and editing tool built on its Nano Banana image generation model. The platform will roll out progressively over the coming weeks to Google Workspace customers and those subscribed to Google AI Pro or Ultra.
How It Differs From Competitors#
Google Pics takes a distinctly different approach than established players in the space. While Canva relies on a creator marketplace where artists and photographers upload templates and graphics to earn royalties, Pics is purpose-built around AI generation trained on existing artwork. Similarly, though Adobe Express serves as a starting point for creators to build original work, Pics emphasizes prompt-based creation—you describe what you want rather than design it manually.
Core Features#
The tool handles typical design needs you'd encounter at work or in personal projects: posters, social media graphics, illustrations, and other visuals. Beyond generation, Pics comes equipped with editing capabilities that let you isolate and modify individual objects, adjust or translate text within images, and perform other refinements. Users can also generate multiple versions of the same prompt and choose their preferred result, plus collaborate with others in real time.
Initial Rollout#
Google is integrating Pics directly into Google Workspace, starting with Docs and Slides as of today. The company plans to extend availability to Google Drive down the line.
