Sony rolls out AI upscaling for base PS5, closing gap with Pro model
A new machine-learning upscaling tool called QSSR brings the graphics technology from the PS5 Pro to standard consoles, though with lower target resolutions.
The Verge
Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-powered graphics upscaling system designed for the standard PlayStation 5. The technology stems from Sony's collaboration with AMD on Project Amethyst and arrives as a more accessible alternative to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which debuted on the PS5 Pro.
How it differs from the Pro version#
Unlike the PS5 Pro's PSSR technology, which leverages dedicated machine-learning hardware to deliver upscaled 4K visuals, QSSR runs on the standard PS5's more modest processing capabilities. This fundamental difference means developers should expect to target upscaled 1440p resolutions rather than the sharper 4K output available on premium hardware. The trade-off reflects the gap in raw computational power between the two consoles.
Sony's graphics engineering lead emphasized that QSSR is designed as a straightforward integration path. According to early testing by Digital Foundry, the system requires only minimal adjustments to adapt games originally optimized for PSSR, making it an enticing option for developers already working with the technology.
Developers get flexibility and reach#
The upscaling tool will roll out to all PlayStation developers as a broadly available option. Rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach, QSSR allows creative teams to fine-tune not just the base rendering resolution but also intermediate processing steps and final output targets depending on the graphics settings players choose.
First titles and expectations#
Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are launching with QSSR support today through new patches that offer the upscaling as an optional graphics mode on PS5. Early impressions from specialists suggest the technology delivers noticeably sharper visuals compared to traditional upscaling methods.
Observers note that QSSR could meaningfully improve the visual quality across an entire generation of games that have struggled with low-resolution rendering and suboptimal upscaling, potentially offering a significant refresh for existing PS5 libraries.
