Trump Administration Clears Anthropic's Powerful AI Models for Worldwide Export
The Commerce Department is removing restrictions on Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models after the AI company agreed to strengthen safeguards against unauthorized access.

The Trump administration is set to remove export restrictions on two of Anthropic's cutting-edge AI systems, marking a significant shift in a monthslong regulatory standoff between the government and the company. The Commerce Department will lift controls on both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, making them available beyond the limited set of corporate and government users who previously had access to Mythos.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick plans to formalize the decision in a letter to Anthropic cofounder Tom Brown, signaling the resolution of tensions that had escalated over the past several weeks.
What Changed the Conversation#
The breakthrough hinges on Anthropic's commitment to bolster technical protections against what regulators call "jailbreaking"—techniques that could allow users to bypass the AI system's safety constraints and unlock restricted capabilities, particularly those related to cybersecurity. The company initially pushed back against government concerns, arguing it was impractical to guarantee zero exploits of its more capable models.
Rather than continue that debate, Anthropic pivoted its approach. The company shifted from asserting the impossibility of preventing all jailbreaks to pledging concrete steps to reduce their frequency and impact. This pragmatic repositioning appears to have satisfied regulators' core worries.
A Diplomatic Reset#
Internal staffing changes also smoothed the path forward. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has been replaced by cofounder Tom Brown in high-level administration meetings—a move reflecting the government's preference for Brown's interpersonal style. That personnel switch, combined with Anthropic's willingness to align its messaging with official safety objectives, helped dissolve a stalemate that had threatened to keep the models offline indefinitely.
The deal represents a win for both sides: the Trump administration can claim it secured tighter safety standards, while Anthropic regains market access for its most advanced systems.
