Meta releases WhatsApp Business MCP for AI agents to streamline setup
Meta has introduced a new Model Context Protocol server that lets AI agents like Claude and Codex automate WhatsApp Business configuration tasks.
The New Stack
WhatsApp messaging has become critical for reaching customers in 2026—paid messaging alone hit a $2 billion annual run rate in late 2025. Yet setting up a WhatsApp Business account remains tedious, requiring developers to juggle account settings, API documentation, and code across multiple tools and windows.
Meta's newly announced solution delegates that friction to AI coding agents via Model Context Protocol (MCP). The WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server lets developers hand off configuration work to Claude, Codex, or similar agents by describing what they need in plain English.
From account setup to ongoing management#
The new tool handles the entire onboarding workflow. A developer provides a phone number and business display name, and the agent orchestrates the steps to register the number on WhatsApp—including receiving and validating Meta's SMS or voice verification code. Access is scoped to specific Meta business accounts the developer selects, preventing agents from accessing unrelated company data.
Beyond initial setup, the agent continues proving useful for recurring tasks. When businesses contact customers outside WhatsApp's 24-hour service window (initiated by each customer message), they must use Meta-approved message templates. The agent can create marketing or utility templates (with headers, body copy, footers, and buttons), list existing templates, update them, or delete them.
Testing and configuration#
Developers can ask the agent to send test messages and verify everything works as expected. If a recipient falls outside the 24-hour window, the agent flags that free-form messaging won't work and suggests an approved template instead.
Incoming messages and webhook configuration also fall under the agent's purview—it can set up the endpoint where WhatsApp routes customer replies and other events to a CRM, support platform, chatbot, or order system. The agent can inspect account status to identify missing setup steps, such as payment information needed for billable messages.
Safety and complementary tools#
All agent actions operate under the developer's own permissions, with Meta recording every read and invocation. State-changing operations require authentication from a human account rather than app credentials.
Meta already released a broader Developer Tools MCP (now called Meta Social Technologies MCP) in June, which helps agents discover Graph API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors across Meta's platform. The new WhatsApp-specific server complements rather than replaces it—both can be installed together if needed.
