OpenAI Unveils Agent RFT: Reinforcement Learning Framework to Optimize Enterprise AI Agents
OpenAI's new Agent Reinforcement Fine-Tuning platform enables businesses to train autonomous agents on custom tasks through reward-based learning, improving reasoning and tool use without manual training data.

Autonomous agents represent a fundamental shift in how AI systems interact with the real world. Unlike traditional models that process inputs and generate outputs in isolation, agents can call upon external tools, iterate through problems, and accomplish complex workflows with minimal human oversight.
OpenAI's fine-tuning team outlined how this capability works in practice: agents require access to domain-specific tools—whether code interpreters for development tasks, customer databases for service workflows, or research browsers for information gathering. Importantly, all tool interactions and reasoning happen within the model's context window, creating a complete record that the agent uses to refine its approach iteratively.
From Pattern Matching to Reasoning Models#
Traditional fine-tuning approaches like supervised learning work by training models to replicate specific patterns from human-labeled examples. This method proves effective for straightforward tasks—summarizing documents, classifying content, matching a particular writing style. But agents tackling complex problems need something different.
That's where reinforcement learning changes the equation. Rather than forcing a model to memorize the "correct" output for given inputs, reinforcement learning teaches models to explore multiple solution paths and learn which ones work best. The model generates its own training examples by attempting tasks repeatedly, then receives a reward signal—essentially a score indicating success or failure—that shapes future behavior.
The critical innovation here is credit assignment: understanding which decisions made earlier in a reasoning chain contributed to the final outcome. When a model can trace how its earlier tool calls or reasoning steps influenced whether it succeeded or failed, it learns to make better decisions across the entire workflow, not just the next immediate token.
Agent RFT: Applying RL to Tool-Using Agents#
OpenAI launched its core Reinforcement Fine-Tuning (RFT) platform in May, enabling users to adapt o4-mini models on specialized tasks spanning tax, genetics, and coding. But standard RFT couldn't handle agents because those systems need to call external tools during the learning process itself—exploring which combinations of tool calls lead to success.
Agent RFT removes that constraint. During training, agents can interact with the actual tools in your environment, discovering through trial and error which approaches work best for your specific use case. Crucially, this means you define the reward function that matters to your business—not generic performance metrics. Sample efficiency improves dramatically since the model learns from its own experience rather than requiring you to manually create labeled training datasets.
