Agentic AI
AI agents need auditable data evidence packets, not just raw retrieval
For agents to make trustworthy decisions, systems must return structured evidence packets with measurement context, data freshness, and competing hypotheses tested—not just matching records.
The New Stack
When an AI agent identifies a spike in shopping cart abandonment after a pricing update, it faces a critical gap: retrieving relevant logs isn't the same as measuring actual change across a population. Pulling 50 session records that show drop-off says nothing about whether conversion rates fell system-wide, whether specific customer segments were hit harder, or whether a concurrent performance issue triggered the problem.
Retrieval-based approaches alone can't answer these diagnostic questions. Agents need a new kind of interface to analytical systems—one that pairs query results with full measurement context and data quality signals.
From retrieval to statistical reasoning#
Traditional retrieval finds candidate evidence: log lines, session recordings, and matching documents. Analytics goes further, computing rates across populations, comparing time windows, aggregating across dimensions, and quantifying shifts.
An agent that reads abandonment logs and concludes "pricing change caused drop-off" has skipped verification. It hasn't confirmed the conversion rate actually dropped after deployment, compared performance across affected and unaffected customer groups, or tested whether technical metrics moved in sync.
For systems that change rapidly, the decisive context often can't be pre-computed or cached. It must be calculated fresh against live data. Agents reasoning about those systems need more than query results—they need proof of what was measured, when, and with what gaps.
Designing the evidence packet structure#
The answer is a bounded evidence packet: a structured response that carries measurements alongside everything needed to interpret, question, or rerun them.
Key fields include:
- Timestamps and freshness signals: An
as_oftimestamp marks when the query ran. Per-sourceingest_watermarksshow how current the underlying data is across regions or pipelines. Aknown_gapsfield makes incomplete coverage explicit. - Metric and query versioning: The packet should reference versioned metric definitions and parameterized query templates, not just IDs or hashes. When an agent reports conversion dropped 22%, reviewers need to see which calculation produced the number and over which population.
- Calculation transparency: Many analytics use approximate algorithms like t-digest percentiles. The packet should flag whether results are exact or approximate, keeping this distinction visible to the agent.
