Researchers map MITRE ATT&CK techniques to software supply chain risk management tasks
A new framework connects adversarial attack techniques to defensive practices, helping organizations align security strategies across multiple standards.
A team of researchers has created a comprehensive mapping between MITRE ATT&CK, a widely-used database of adversarial tactics and techniques, and the Proactive Software Supply Chain Risk Management (P-SSCRM) Framework. This tool helps organizations understand which defensive tasks can counteract specific attack methods targeting software supply chains.
Cross-Framework Alignment#
The mapping serves a dual purpose: it not only connects MITRE ATT&CK attack techniques to P-SSCRM mitigation tasks, but also establishes links between P-SSCRM and 10 additional government and industry security frameworks. This interconnected approach allows organizations to see how their existing security practices align across multiple established standards.
Development Methodology#
The researchers employed four independent mapping strategies to validate their results and ensure consistency. By requiring agreement across these different approaches, the team aimed to produce reliable mappings that reflect genuine defensive coverage rather than arbitrary associations.
Practical Application#
For software organizations seeking to strengthen their security posture, this framework provides a structured way to evaluate their current defenses against documented supply chain attack vectors. Rather than navigating frameworks in isolation, teams can now understand how their risk management tasks translate across different security standards and threat models.
