IBM Launches Granite 4.2 Open-Weight Models Built for Local Deployment
IBM's latest Granite family brings reasoning-focused variants designed to run on users' own hardware without cloud dependency.
Ars Technica
IBM has introduced its newest generation of open-weight language models available for download and self-hosting. The Granite 4.2 lineup comes in three sizes—3 billion, 8 billion, and 30 billion parameters—tapping into growing demand for locally-deployed AI systems.
What's new in Granite 4.2#
The models maintain IBM's decoder-only architecture while expanding the native context window to 128,000 tokens. The larger 8B and 30B variants have undergone agentic reinforcement learning training, enabling them to interact with external systems like terminal commands, web searches, and third-party tools. The 3B model includes tool support as well, though without the same depth of specialized training.
This release carries a distinctive focus: IBM explicitly positions Granite 4.2 as the "reasoning-focused" iteration of its language model family.
Understanding reasoning in AI#
When technologists discuss a model's reasoning ability, they're not describing conscious comprehension. Instead, they mean functional reasoning—the model's capacity to work through problems step-by-step using techniques like chain-of-thought prompting, where intermediate results inform each subsequent stage of processing.
The emphasis reflects where the field is heading: capabilities that let models break down complex tasks rather than simply output single-pass answers.
