Microsoft Consolidates Copilot Apps Into Unified Super App Interface
Microsoft is merging its consumer and work Copilot assistants into a single app, eliminating duplicate taskbar icons and laying groundwork for a broader "super app" rollout.
The Verge
Microsoft is unifying its fragmented Copilot ecosystem by consolidating both its consumer and enterprise AI assistants into a single application. The move collapses the previously separate Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps into one interface that will accommodate both personal and work accounts, while introducing a refreshed visual design.
End of the Duplicate Icons#
One immediate benefit for users will be the elimination of redundant taskbar and system tray clutter. Previously, running both personal and work versions of Copilot meant two separate icons competing for space on Windows and Mac desktops. The consolidated app retains the "Microsoft Copilot" name but refreshes its icon to signal the new direction.
Rollout Timeline and Platform Availability#
The integration is rolling out in phases across different platforms. Mobile and web versions will begin their worldwide deployment in mid-August, while desktop applications for Windows and Mac will follow in mid-September. Windows Insider users will see these changes becoming available immediately, with broader device support following over the coming weeks. Users of the mobile version will receive prompts to download the updated Copilot application.
Account Separation and Data Migration#
The unified app maintains strict boundaries between personal and work contexts. Users can continue switching between their Microsoft account and their Microsoft Entra ID (work or school) credentials, with data remaining fully isolated between the two account types within the single application.
Existing Copilot users will transition automatically, preserving their chat history and saved content. Those currently using the Microsoft 365 Copilot app will see navigation adjustments, the new icon, and newly available Copilot chat functionality. For users maintaining both apps simultaneously, Microsoft will merge their chats and content into the single updated version while keeping the underlying account data separate.
Features Being Retired and Maintained#
Not all existing features are making the transition. Podcasts and Deep Research will be discontinued and unavailable after August 18th. Group Chat threads, messages, and related content also won't transfer to the new experience after that date. Other tools, including Shopping and Copilot Health, may experience temporary unavailability during the transition period.
