New benchmark tests how well AI can turn research ideas into structured plans
Researchers introduce Idea2Plan, a benchmark measuring large language models' ability to develop organized research plans from initial concepts.
Large language models have shown promise in supporting scientific work through data analysis, hypothesis generation, and methodological innovation. But how well can they actually convert a rough research concept into a detailed, executable plan? A new study addresses this gap with a systematic benchmark.
What's being measured#
Researchers introduced Idea2Plan, a framework and associated benchmark designed to evaluate whether LLMs can take a research idea and produce a well-structured plan with all the components a scientist would expect. The team built their benchmark using recently published papers from ICML 2025 and Nature Mental Health—sources that fall outside the training cutoffs of major language models, ensuring the task tests genuine capability rather than memorized content.
Each benchmark instance pairs a research idea with an expert-designed grading rubric that defines what makes a plan valid and complete.
How they validated the evaluation#
The researchers went further and created Idea2Plan JudgeEval, a companion benchmark to test whether LLMs themselves can reliably judge research plans. This adds a layer of quality control—measuring not just how well models generate plans, but whether they can accurately assess them against expert standards.
Key findings#
Testing across models revealed that GPT-5 achieved the strongest results overall. However, the study found significant room for improvement across the board, indicating that this remains an open challenge in AI-assisted research.
Why it matters#
The ability to convert ideas into actionable plans is more than just a useful researcher skill. It represents a foundational capability for developing autonomous research agents—AI systems that could eventually operate independently on scientific problems. This benchmark provides the first rigorous way to measure progress in that direction.
