IBM Taps OpenAI to Accelerate Enterprise AI Rollout Across Large Corporations
The two companies will jointly develop industry-specific AI solutions and retrain thousands of IBM consultants as competition intensifies for corporate AI contracts.
TechCrunch — AI
IBM and OpenAI have forged a strategic partnership aimed at bringing OpenAI's AI capabilities to Fortune 500 firms and other large enterprises. The arrangement leverages IBM's sprawling consulting network to distribute OpenAI's models and tools at scale, marking another significant move in the race to dominate enterprise AI spending.
Scope of the Partnership#
The two firms will collaborate on joint marketing efforts and create custom AI solutions tailored to specific industries, including financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail. IBM Consulting will stand up a dedicated practice for OpenAI technologies and plans to upskill tens of thousands of consultants—largely by retraining its current workforce—on OpenAI's platforms and methodologies over the coming months, according to Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting.
The training curriculum will cover OpenAI's code generation tools, API integration, cybersecurity applications, and solution design skills. Additionally, IBM will cultivate a team of specialized "Forward Deployed Experts" through OpenAI's partner certification program.
AI Model Integration#
OpenAI's latest generative models—including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work—will be embedded directly into IBM Consulting Advantage, the company's proprietary AI platform for consultants. This integration is designed to help organizations adopt and scale AI systems across critical business processes.
Strategic Context#
The deal expands OpenAI's footprint in the enterprise market, where the company has already inked similar agreements with major IT services providers Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services. Competition in the AI space has shifted from model innovation to capturing corporate clients and winning large-scale implementation contracts.
For IBM, the partnership complements its broader strategy of remaining model-agnostic—offering clients a mix of its own Granite AI models alongside third-party solutions through its watsonx ecosystem and consulting arm. The agreement builds on a cybersecurity partnership the two companies announced in June, which brought OpenAI technology into IBM's autonomous security platform.
