Moonshot's Kimi K3 aims to rival Anthropic's top-tier model
China's Moonshot AI is preparing to release an open-weight model said to match the performance of Anthropic's latest closed-source offering.
TechCrunch — AI
Moonshot AI, a Chinese artificial intelligence company, is preparing to launch Kimi K3, a powerful open-weight model expected to perform competitively with Anthropic's Opus 4.8, according to reporting from the Financial Times citing unnamed sources.
The model's scale and timing#
The upcoming Kimi K3 is positioned to become China's largest open-weight AI model to date, boasting a parameter count in the 2 trillion to 3 trillion range. The company plans to release the system in the coming days. This represents a significant step forward from Moonshot's prior Kimi K2 series, which has already earned strong marks in the open-source AI landscape, ranking well on benchmarks while narrowing the distance to frontier models developed elsewhere.
Moonshot's growth and funding#
Alongside the model announcement, Moonshot is pursuing a fresh funding round that would value the company at $31.5 billion, up from a $20 billion valuation when it raised $2 billion in May. The capital infusion underscores investor confidence in the firm's trajectory as competition intensifies across the AI sector.
Pressure on proprietary model providers#
The Kimi K3 launch arrives amid mounting questions about whether enterprises should continue paying premium prices for closed-source AI systems from incumbents like OpenAI and Anthropic. Corporate leaders have raised concerns that proprietary platforms could misappropriate sensitive business data uploaded for processing. This anxiety has fueled interest in deploying open-weight alternatives—whether from Chinese labs such as DeepSeek or Moonshot, or other developers—which organizations can customize and host themselves without depending on external providers. The economics and data-privacy case for open models has strengthened as Chinese-developed systems close the performance gap with their costly counterparts.
