German authorities seize bomb-laden drone near Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig airport
Police disarmed an explosives-equipped drone spotted near Ukrainian cargo planes and are investigating whether a second device struck a landing airliner.

German police neutralized a weaponized drone discovered hovering near Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig airport late on August 4, prompting officials to launch a counterterrorism inquiry and consider whether a second drone may have struck an incoming commercial flight.
Drone discovery and disarmament#
The unmanned vehicle was first noticed by an airport worker in the early hours near two parked Antonov Airlines An-124 cargo planes. The device had undergone modifications intended to evade the airport's drone-detection systems, according to Alexander Dobrindt, Germany's federal interior minister.
The drone carried what authorities believe to be Semtex plastic explosive packed into a fist-sized container. A faulty detonator apparently prevented the device from detonating. Bomb disposal personnel employed a robotic system to safely render the drone inert before conducting a controlled demolition.
Airport disruption and possible second incident#
The security emergency forced Leipzig/Halle airport, one of Europe's premier cargo hubs, to suspend operations temporarily. The closure diverted 19 flights, including a DHL Boeing 757 that had to abandon its landing sequence. As that aircraft climbed to safety, it struck an unidentified object in mid-air and sustained minor damage before landing safely in Hanover.
Investigators are examining whether the object was a second drone connected to the first incident.
Disputed cargo and attack motive#
The German Interior Ministry has refuted claims that the targeted Ukrainian aircraft were transporting weapons or ammunition. Officials stated the planes were empty at the time of the incident.
While no suspect has been publicly identified, Dobrindt characterized the attack as a potential "hybrid threat" involving foreign actors. The incident has prompted a formal counterterrorism investigation, though authorities have not yet disclosed a confirmed motive or origin.
