AI Agent Pitched as Fix for Relationship Neglect Faces Backlash Over Enabling Avoidance
An advertisement for Orchid, an AI assistant that manages romantic gestures and tasks, sparked debate about whether automation can address deeper relationship problems.
WIRED — AI
A newly unveiled AI assistant called Orchid has triggered considerable pushback after promoting itself as a solution to relationship friction—by essentially enabling one partner to shirk responsibilities while an AI does the work instead.
The Pitch and Its Problem#
The promotional video showed a scenario in which a boyfriend, distracted by video games and household chores, had completely forgotten his anniversary. When reminded by Orchid, he enlisted the AI to book a restaurant reservation and purchase flowers—his girlfriend's favorites—under his name. Both parties were aware the AI had orchestrated everything, yet he still received full credit.
Online users quickly criticized the approach, characterizing it as appealing to "adult babies" indifferent to their relationships and as a band-aid for partnerships destined to fail.
What Therapists Say#
Mental health professionals warn that outsourcing emotional labor masks deeper incompatibilities rather than resolving them. According to licensed marriage and family therapist Lauren Maher, "Trying to outsource difficult but necessary communication will prevent couples from facing the messy but meaningful growing pains of their relationship."
Maher noted that the arrangement introduces triangulation—having a third party mediate between partners rather than communicating directly—a dynamic therapists routinely discourage. "An AI app will never be able to compensate for a lack of attention or genuine caring," she added, cautioning that such workarounds typically surface unaddressed resentments later.
A Broader Pattern of Dating and AI#
The concerns around Orchid align with broader findings about AI's role in romantic decision-making. A recent survey from astrology app Hint, covering over 13,000 participants across the US, Latin America, and Europe, found that 59 percent said AI relationship advice left them more confused rather than enlightened. Additionally, 47 percent reported postponing relationship decisions altogether due to algorithmic input overload.
The Broader Vision#
Orchid's core mission extends beyond romantic task-management to workflow automation—syncing across connected apps to streamline daily life more broadly. However, whether the company's general premise offers meaningfully different capabilities from competing AI agents remains unclear. The relationship angle appears largely designed to generate attention rather than represent the product's primary value proposition.
