Google Pay Unveils Agentic Commerce Tools and Android Parity Updates
At Google I/O, the platform announced new developer capabilities including Universal Commerce Protocol support, MCP server integration, and streamlined checkout workflows for both web and mobile.
Google Developers Blog (AI)
Google has rolled out a suite of updates to its payments platform designed to power AI-driven shopping experiences. Speaking at Google I/O, the company detailed how merchants can transition to "agentic commerce"—where AI agents handle transactions—while keeping their existing Google Pay infrastructure intact.
Key Updates#
Universal Commerce Protocol and MCP Server
Existing Google Pay merchants can now leverage the new Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to unlock AI-agent-powered transactions without rebuilding payment logic. Google also introduced the Google Pay & Wallet Developer MCP server, which integrates AI agents directly into development workflows to help manage integrations, troubleshoot errors, and generate code. The MCP server is available in Public Preview today, with general availability planned later in 2026.
Android Checkout Parity
The onPaymentAuthorized and onPaymentDataChanged callbacks are now available on Android, matching web capabilities. This enables "1-click Express checkout" experiences on Product Detail and Cart pages, with dynamic shipping options and tax calculations based on user address. The move can improve authorization rates and conversion by delivering instant feedback without closing the payment sheet.
Social App Integration
Following WebView support introduced last year, Google Pay now extends to major social platforms, allowing merchants to enable payments across native Android apps, mobile web, desktop, and social environments with a single integration.
Optimization and Compliance Features#
New tools for managing costs and compliance include:
- Card Funding Source Signal: The Google Pay API now returns whether a card is Credit, Debit, or Prepaid, enabling merchants to apply dynamic pricing or discounts based on card type.
- Australia Eftpos Routing: Merchants in Australia can now prioritize domestic eftpos networks and route transactions dynamically using the
merchantPreferredCobadgedCardNetworksparameter. - Recurring Billing Support: Lifecycle notifications for payment tokens alert merchants when credentials change, allowing proactive customer outreach before the next billing cycle.
