OpenAI hires Patreon's founding trio to launch creator monetization tools
The AI company is bringing in Patreon's co-founder and top product leaders as it prepares to unveil new creator-focused features.

OpenAI has assembled a high-profile team from Patreon—including co-founder Sam Yam, along with the platform's former heads of product and engineering—to spearhead its push into creator monetization. The move signals the company's intention to compete directly in the space that Patreon pioneered over more than a decade.
A seasoned creator-economy team#
Yam, who launched Patreon 13 years ago as a subscription platform for creators, announced on X that he's now leading Creator Product at OpenAI. He's joined by Drew Rowny, Patreon's product chief, and Shannon Ma, its engineering lead. Both departed from Patreon within the past few weeks.

What's coming next#
Yam hinted at imminent announcements tied to OpenAI's developer conference. "We're going to build together with Creators at OpenAI and share early access to a new set of tools that I think will be critically valuable to Creators and their communities," he wrote, urging followers to watch OpenAI's DevDay event scheduled for Tuesday, September 29th. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also teased additional major news arriving this week.
A weakening Patreon#
The departure marks another challenge for Patreon, which has faced significant turbulence. The platform laid off 20 percent of its workforce in January and recently outlined an extensive overhaul roadmap aimed at refreshing its feature set and user experience. Losing its founding creator may intensify questions about the company's direction as competition in the space intensifies.
