Agentic AI
AgentLens moves beyond pass/fail to evaluate how AI coding agents actually work in production
A new benchmark assesses AI coding agents on their entire decision-making trajectory, not just whether they complete a task.
Most evaluations of coding AI agents boil down to a simple binary: did the task succeed or fail? AgentLens, presented as a new production-focused benchmark, expands that view by examining the full arc of how an agent operates—its reasoning steps, tool usage, error recovery, and communication with users.
Beyond the binary outcome#
Existing code-agent benchmarks typically compress an agent's entire run into a single success metric. AgentLens captures what actually matters in real-world deployment: does the agent follow instructions accurately? Does it verify its own work? Can it recover when things go wrong? How clearly does it communicate with users? By assessing these dimensions, the benchmark yields richer feedback than a bare pass-or-fail score.
How it works#
The approach combines two evaluation strategies. Where objective correctness can be verified—such as through formal checks—AgentLens uses that ground truth. For aspects that require subjective judgment, the system employs LLM-generated reviews and side-by-side comparisons, creating a human-readable explanation of why each run received its score. This dual methodology transforms a score into a diagnostic tool.
Real-world applications#
The team behind AgentLens demonstrates the benchmark's utility across multiple use cases: identifying specific weaknesses in model behavior, tracking improvements across successive versions of an agent, and catching regressions in automated testing pipelines. The benchmark is available as open source, per the abstract.
