Amazon commits $13 billion more to India AI infrastructure push
The e-commerce and cloud giant is expanding its data center footprint in Mumbai and Hyderabad as global tech firms race to build AI computing hubs in India.

Amazon announced a fresh $13 billion investment in India's AI and cloud infrastructure on Thursday, following a meeting between CEO Andy Jassy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The capital will expand Amazon Web Services' data center capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad through 2030.
This marks Amazon's third major India commitment in as many years. The company previously pledged $15 billion in 2023 and over $35 billion in December 2025, bringing its total planned investment to $48 billion—though the company has not specified how this will be divided across capital expenditure and operations.
The India AI race heats up#
Amazon's move reflects a broader push by tech giants to position India as a global AI infrastructure hub. Microsoft committed $17.5 billion for India through 2029, while Google pledged $15 billion for AI and data center infrastructure. Domestic players are also mobilizing: Reliance Industries announced $110 billion and Adani Group pledged $100 billion for AI data centers.
India has sweetened the deal with tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers on overseas workloads run from Indian data centers through 2047.
Quick-commerce expansion underway#
Beyond cloud infrastructure, Amazon is ramping up its retail presence. The company plans to open over 20 fulfillment centers and 100 last-mile delivery stations this year, and is expanding its Amazon Now quick-commerce service to more than 300 cities—competing directly with Flipkart, Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart in India's crowded rapid delivery market.
