Vertu's $6,880 Executive AI Phone Struggles to Justify Its Price Tag
The luxury phone maker's Alphafold foldable pairs premium materials with an AI agent, but testing reveals inconsistent performance and a cost that's hard to defend.
TechCrunch — AI
Luxury smartphone maker Vertu is betting that wealthy executives will spend nearly $7,000 on its Alphafold foldable phone, powered by an AI agent designed to streamline their working day. Rather than chasing mainstream consumers with specs and benchmarks, Vertu positions the Alphafold as a status symbol paired with artificial intelligence—a novel combination in a market saturated with commodity devices.
To test whether that pitch holds water, I spent several days using the Alphafold as an executive would: managing documents, planning trips, analyzing contracts, and relying on its bundled AI agent as a digital companion. The result: a mixed experience that reveals both promise and significant shortcomings.
Hardware Built on Someone Else's Design#
The Alphafold exudes luxury on the surface. Its calfskin leather casing and titanium accents feel refined, and the packaging rivals a jewelry presentation—a deliberate signal that Vertu is selling aspiration alongside a foldable phone. At 264 grams, it's noticeably heavier than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 (215 grams), though not unwieldy. The curved frame makes unfolding smoother than Samsung's flatter design, though Samsung's foldable remains more comfortable to grip when closed.
Beneath the premium veneer, however, lies a borrowed foundation. The Alphafold shares striking similarities with ZTE's $1,100 Nubia Fold: identical hinge designs, speaker placement, and fingerprint reader positioning. Vertu confirmed it partnered with ZTE for hardware and production, adding its own materials, software, quality control, and after-sales support.
This isn't a secret formula—Vertu has previously adapted ZTE hardware for luxury phones. The luxury tax here isn't for innovative engineering but for materials and the ecosystem surrounding the device.
The AI Agent: Ambitious but Unfinished#
Vertu's real gamble rests on Hermes Agent, an AI assistant built atop the open-source Hermes project. Unlike typical phone assistants that respond to prompts, Hermes is designed to execute multi-step workflows autonomously: analyzing files, automating actions across apps, managing schedules, and handing off complex tasks to Vertu's human concierge service.
Testing revealed Hermes is more autonomous than Google's Gemini on Samsung's foldable, but that autonomy proved double-edged:
