Bluesky's Attie AI tool shifts focus toward open social research capabilities
The custom-feed building assistant now lets users query the entire Bluesky network and AT Protocol ecosystem for trending information and influential accounts.
TechCrunch — AI
Bluesky has rolled out a significant expansion to Attie, its AI-powered assistant, introducing a new feature called Quests that transforms the tool from a feed-builder into a research and information-discovery platform for the broader social network.
What Quests Does#
The feature allows users to pose open-ended questions to Attie about activity and discussions happening across Bluesky and any compatible application built on the underlying AT Protocol—the open-source infrastructure powering the social network. Through Quests, users can now identify trending subjects, discover influential voices in specific domains or regions, and surface newsworthy conversations spreading through the Atmosphere, Bluesky's term for the distributed social ecosystem.
Strategic Timing Amid Slowing Growth#
The expansion comes as Bluesky faces moderated growth after a dramatic surge. The platform doubled its user base to 40 million accounts just over a year ago but has since grown more slowly, with the company now reporting approximately 45.6 million registered accounts. The new capabilities represent Bluesky's effort to build differentiated tools and services that could both retain users and create future monetization pathways.
Attie's Evolving Role#
Attie debuted in March as a separate product enabling users to design custom algorithms and feeds without programming skills. Initially free, the tool has been positioned as a potential paid offering down the road. The service carries forward Bluesky's broader vision of distributing content-curation power to users rather than centralizing it. According to chief innovation officer Jay Graber, the approach reflects a philosophy that "tools that help people make sense of the world will prove to be more useful than those that fill it with confusion."
Bluesky is simultaneously redesigning Attie's interface, adding accessibility improvements and a new visual identity, with additional updates expected in coming months. The Quests feature is currently in beta, rolling out through a waitlist.
Navigating Community Tensions#
The move represents a careful balancing act. Many Bluesky users harbor reservations about AI adoption for environmental, economic, and political reasons, yet the company needs revenue streams to sustain operations and continue developing the AT Protocol infrastructure. A $100 million Series B round, which closed in 2025, provides runway for these experimental initiatives alongside other potential revenue models such as premium subscriptions or power-user tools.
