The payments giant is buying OpenRouter, a platform that lets developers access and compare hundreds of AI models through a single interface.

Stripe has completed an acquisition of OpenRouter, a startup that simplifies how developers and businesses interact with AI models. Bloomberg reported the deal is valued at more than $7 billion.
About OpenRouter#
OpenRouter operates as a unified gateway for artificial intelligence. Rather than forcing customers to lock into a single model provider, the platform lets users evaluate and select from a catalog of over 400 different AI models based on their requirements and budget. OpenRouter claims to serve approximately 8 million users globally.
The startup's funding has grown rapidly. In May, it closed a $113 million Series B round at a $1.3 billion valuation, backed by prominent investors including Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's Capital G. CEO Alex Atallah had characterized the business as "the equivalent of Stripe for AI," emphasizing how it provides a single access point that prevents vendor lock-in.
Deal progression#
Speculation about a tie-up between the two companies emerged in July, when the Wall Street Journal reported they were in advanced negotiations. Bloomberg's latest reporting confirms those talks have closed, with the final price tag exceeding $7 billion.
Stripe declined to comment on the acquisition when contacted by TechCrunch.
