Anthropic rolls out local rupee pricing for Claude in India, betting on its second-largest market
The AI company is localizing Claude's cost structure for India, where it accounts for nearly 6% of global usage, though it still lags OpenAI in payment method support.

Anthropic has begun rolling out Indian rupee pricing for Claude across its platform, marking a significant effort to deepen its presence in what has become its most important market beyond the United States.
The pricing shift#
Claude subscriptions now carry localized pricing tags in India. The Claude Pro tier costs ₹2,000 (roughly $21) monthly on annual billing—slightly higher than the $17 U.S. rate. Claude Max, the premium offering, sits at ₹11,999 (approximately $125) per month, versus $100 stateside. Team plans begin at ₹2,399 (around $25) per seat monthly, compared with $20 in the U.S. All prices reflect local taxes. Pricing on Claude's mobile applications shows minor variations from the web pricing.
The shift addresses long-standing friction for Indian users, who previously faced dollar-denominated costs and currency conversion drag when subscribing to the service. Community members have publicly advocated for this localization over the past year.
A major market, still growing#
India represents 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it the platform's second-ranked territory after America, according to Anthropic's own data. This scale underscores why the company has invested heavily in the region—opening a Bengaluru office in February and naming a former Microsoft India executive, Irina Ghose, to helm its expansion efforts. Recent partnerships with IT service providers Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services signal further commitment to enterprise deployments across the country.
Catching up on payments#
One gap remains. Unlike OpenAI, which introduced Indian rupee pricing for ChatGPT in August with UPI support, Anthropic has not yet enabled the Unified Payments Interface—India's dominant instant payment standard. Users currently must rely on card payments or Apple and Google's app store billing infrastructure, a limitation that could slow adoption among cost-conscious segments.
Headwinds and broader context#
Anthropic's India push faced complications last June when it abruptly blocked access to newer models for non-U.S. entities, prompting Indian developers to explore competing AI systems. While the Fable 5 restriction was later , Mythos 5 access remains curtailed. Despite India's deep reservoir of technical talent and developers, converting high usage into paid subscriptions has historically proven difficult in a price-sensitive market.
