New Benchmark Tests LLM Agents on Real-World Software Compilation Tasks
Researchers introduce BuildBench, a realistic dataset for evaluating how well AI agents can handle the messy work of compiling open-source projects.
Compiling open-source software remains one of the most time-consuming and error-prone tasks in software development. Researchers have now created a new benchmark to test how well language model–powered agents can tackle this challenge in realistic conditions.
The Challenge of OSS Compilation#
Building open-source projects is far messier than many benchmarks assume. Real-world code often comes with incomplete documentation, missing or conflicting dependencies, and build configurations that require custom tweaking. Previous evaluation efforts typically cherry-picked only the highest-quality repositories, which masks these practical difficulties and makes agent performance appear artificially strong.
Introducing BuildBench#
A new research effort proposes BuildBench, a more demanding benchmark covering a broader and messier selection of open-source projects. Rather than focusing on well-maintained code with clear instructions, the dataset reflects genuine compilation obstacles: absent build documentation, undocumented requirements, and source files or build scripts that need patching to compile successfully.
The OSS-Build-Agent Approach#
The team also developed OSS-Build-Agent, an LLM-powered system designed to handle this complexity. The agent includes an enhanced retrieval module for finding build instructions and adapts its strategy to different project characteristics. It achieves strong results on the new benchmark and serves as a proof-of-concept for how agents might tackle real compilation work.
Why This Matters#
The researchers argue that performance on BuildBench better reflects genuine capability in software engineering tasks. By evaluating against more realistic data, the benchmark can guide development of agents that actually work on production problems in software development and security domains.
