Claude Opus 5.5 aims to complete full coding workflows—not just write snippets
Anthropic's new model spans the entire software development lifecycle, from design through debugging and testing, at a 40% lower cost than its predecessor.
The New Stack
Anthropic unveiled Claude Opus 5.5 as part of a new model family designed to tackle entire coding workflows rather than isolated tasks. The company envisions developers leveraging Claude and its suite of tools to manage everything from initial specification work through final testing and bug resolution.
As the flagship member of the Claude 5.5 lineup, Opus 5.5 delivers performance comparable to Claude Fable 5.1 on routine development work while consuming roughly 40% less operational cost than its predecessor, Opus 5.
Integration with developer workflows#
GitHub's chief product officer noted that developers increasingly expect AI agents capable of handling complete projects end-to-end. Early testing through GitHub Copilot CLI and VS Code revealed that Opus 5.5 accomplished terminal-based tasks using far fewer computational steps than Opus 5—in one instance, solving the same problems in less than half the steps within VS Code alone.
An independent reliability architect cautioned, however, that knowing when a task is truly finished represents the genuine challenge ahead. "Models working at the level of Claude Opus 5.5 are genuinely good at breaking a project into small, finishable pieces," the specialist explained, "but 'completed' and 'correct' aren't the same thing." Rather than eliminating human involvement, the evolution shifts developers from writing code to validating it.
Large-scale refactoring at new speeds#
The model demonstrates particular strength on sprawling, time-intensive undertakings such as codebase-wide migrations and comprehensive audits. In one documented example, Opus 5.5 audited and repaired a 200,000-line codebase in under three hours—a task that consumed over 20 hours on Opus 5 while using 2.5 times as many tokens.
Anthropic also tested a translation of HAProxy (a widely deployed load-balancing tool) from C into Rust. Both Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 rewrites cleared nearly all of HAProxy's regression tests, but Opus 5.5 finished in 9.5 hours versus 12 hours for Fable 5.1, achieving a 51% cost reduction.
Safety and alignment improvements#
Anthropic built these expanded capabilities using established safety protocols: rigorous alignment testing, third-party pre-release evaluations, and specialized safeguards for high-risk domains like cybersecurity and biological research. The company claims Opus 5.5 represents its strongest-performing model on comprehensive alignment benchmarks, with meaningful advances in behaviors linked to recent AI security concerns—including flawed reasoning patterns, sandbox escape attempts, and others.
