Google's Agent Development Kit Enables Cross-Language AI Agent Collaboration
ADK and the A2A protocol let teams build specialized agents in Python, Go, or any language while orchestrating them into coordinated production systems.

Production AI systems rarely stay single-language demos. Google's Agent Development Kit (ADK) tackles this reality by enabling teams to build specialized agents in Python, Go, Rust, or any technology—then orchestrate them into coordinated pipelines using the Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol.
The Multi-Language Agent Problem#
Real-world systems fragment across teams with different expertise. A data science team might excel at building extraction agents in Python, while a systems team prefers Go for deterministic, high-performance validation. The challenge: neither team wants to rewrite code in another language, yet the agents must work together seamlessly.
According to Google Developers Blog, monolithic single-agent approaches fail in production for three reasons:
- Context degradation: Beyond 10–15 tools, models miss instructions or hallucinate parameters as the surface area widens
- Blast radius: A single failure in one feature crashes the entire workflow
- Untestable systems: Dozens of entangled responsibilities make regression testing guesswork
Decomposing the Monolith into Agents#
The solution mirrors backend microservices architecture: decompose into specialized agents with one job each, a focused prompt, and minimal toolsets.
The A2A protocol functions as "the HTTP of the agent world"—a shared contract enabling agents built anywhere to interoperate. It standardizes:
- Discovery: Agents publish Agent Cards (JSON metadata at
/.well-known/agent.json) declaring capabilities, similar to OpenAPI specs - Communication: Data flows via JSON-RPC 2.0 using typed Message Parts (TextParts for language, DataParts for structured JSON)
- Task lifecycle: Interactions transition through defined states (submitted → working → completed/failed), enabling both synchronous and asynchronous workflows
A Contract Compliance Pipeline in Action#
Google demonstrates the pattern with a contract compliance system:
