Google Photos rolls out AI-powered Video Remix for instant video transformation
Google is bringing generative video editing directly into Photos, letting users reshape clips with cinematic relighting and artistic effects in seconds.
TechCrunch — AI
Google Photos is introducing a new AI-driven video editing capability called Video Remix, powered by the company's Gemini Omni model. The tool lets users rapidly edit and reshape video clips without specialized software, marking another step in Google's effort to embed generative AI across its consumer applications.
What Video Remix does#
The feature sits within Google Photos' Create tab and enables several rapid transformations:
- Relighting: Brighten dark footage with cinematic or morning-light effects
- Background replacement: Swap plain backgrounds for custom alternatives
- Artistic styling: Apply filters mimicking watercolor, pencil sketch, and oil painting techniques
Users can, for instance, relight a video with a sunrise glow, make footage appear shot in a greenhouse, or render clips in watercolor style — all accomplished through a handful of taps.
Rolling out now with restrictions#
Video Remix is launching today for subscribers in Google's AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra tiers across the U.S., Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, and Turkey.
Part of a broader AI expansion#
This release joins a wave of recent AI upgrades to the Photos app. The platform earlier rolled out touch-up tools for correcting skin imperfections, adjusting eye brightness, and whitening teeth, along with an AI-driven digital wardrobe feature that catalogs clothing from photos and suggests outfit combinations. The moves reflect Google's wider strategy of embedding AI-powered editing directly into everyday apps to keep users engaged within its ecosystem while competing with Apple, OpenAI, and Adobe.
