Redesigning bug reports in open-source firmware to speed up fixes
Researchers propose adding structured fields to GitHub issue templates in the TianoCore UEFI firmware project to help developers triage and resolve bugs more effectively.
A team of researchers has identified gaps in how bug reports are currently documented within TianoCore, a major open-source firmware development community, and proposes enhancing the bug reporting process to streamline issue resolution.
The problem with current bug reports#
When developers submit bug reports through GitHub Issues, they typically fill in free-form text fields with information about the problem. However, researchers analyzing TianoCore's bug repository discovered that key details useful for triaging and fixing issues are only sporadically included. This inconsistency makes it harder for maintainers to prioritize work and understand the scope of reported problems.
Proposed improvements#
The study focuses on EDK II, the core component of UEFI firmware used across numerous hardware manufacturers and firmware vendors. The researchers propose adding new structured fields to the existing bug report template to capture critical information that currently goes missing from many submissions. By making certain fields mandatory or more prominent, the template would encourage reporters to provide the details developers need to act quickly.
Next steps#
The initiative is still in progress. The team has conducted preliminary interviews with several developers to refine their approach and gather feedback on the proposed template changes. They plan to expand engagement with the broader TianoCore community, including A/B testing the new format to demonstrate whether it meaningfully improves both the speed and quality of bug triage and resolution workflows.
