OpenAI and Work Louder are launching a hardware device for Codex programmers
A teaser video hints at a macro pad designed to give developers quick access to shortcuts for OpenAI's AI coding assistant.

OpenAI is preparing to unveil a dedicated hardware device tied to its Codex coding assistant on July 15th. The announcement came through a teaser video posted on X, which showcases a compact, square-shaped gadget featuring multiple buttons. The clip hints that "Your favorite Codex shortcuts are getting an upgrade."
A macro pad partnership#
The device represents a collaboration between OpenAI and Work Louder, a manufacturer known for producing mechanical keyboards and customizable macro pads. While neither company has disclosed detailed specifications, the device's appearance bears resemblance to Work Louder's Creator Micro 2—a macro pad equipped with 13 mechanical switches, a joystick, and a touch sensor.
Users typically employ such devices to assign custom shortcuts and commands to physical buttons, allowing them to streamline workflows in creative or development-focused applications. Figma has previously followed a similar playbook, partnering with Work Louder to release a preconfigured macro pad geared toward its users.
What's coming next#
Details remain scarce as OpenAI keeps its cards close, but the July 15th launch date means specifics about the Codex hardware device should emerge within weeks. This announcement is separate from OpenAI's longer-term AI hardware initiative with designer Jony Ive, which remains in development.
