GitHub Code Quality Goes Live, Adding AI-Powered Maintainability Checks Amid Rising AI-Generated Code
GitHub's new Code Quality service now generally available, combining static analysis with AI-powered autofix to help teams manage code maintainability as AI-assisted development increases code output.
InfoQ
GitHub has moved Code Quality out of preview and into general availability on Enterprise Cloud and Team plans. The platform now offers a unified approach to detecting and addressing maintainability and reliability issues using CodeQL static analysis paired with AI-assisted problem detection and automated fix suggestions through Copilot Autofix.
What's New in the GA Release#
The production launch expands capabilities beyond the 10,000+ enterprises that tested the tool since October 2025. Organisations can now enable Code Quality across their entire workspace, access centralised dashboards tracking maintainability and reliability metrics, monitor test coverage, and set up quality gates using rulesets. An evaluation mode allows teams to roll out enforcement gradually without immediate blocking of pull requests.
How It Works#
The service operates at two critical junctures in development. During pull requests, CodeQL surfaces quality findings inline and tracks how changes affect test coverage. On the default branch, it scans for accumulated technical debt across repositories. Teams can configure rulesets to enforce minimum coverage thresholds or other quality standards.
GitHub's internal testing found that 67.3 percent of findings raised by Code Quality were resolved before merging—an internal benchmark offered to illustrate the tool's effectiveness rather than guarantee universal outcomes.
Pricing and Scope#
Code Quality carries a separate fee of $10 per active committer per month, in addition to existing GitHub charges. Active committers are counted organisation-wide based on who pushed to an enabled repository within the previous 90 days. Deterministic CodeQL scans use standard GitHub Actions compute; AI-assisted detection and Copilot Autofix incur additional usage-based charges. Both GitHub-hosted and self-hosted runners are supported.
Existing preview users should review configurations carefully: setups will continue under current agreements, but organisations not wanting to pay for the service must disable Code Quality before it incurs charges.
The tool remains unavailable on GitHub Enterprise Server for now.
Market Context#
Competitors are pursuing similar strategies. examines merge requests using repository and compliance context, generating structured feedback at a flat $0.25 per review. reviews pull requests across Bitbucket and GitHub, leveraging Jira acceptance criteria to validate that implementations match intended requirements—the company reported a 30.8 percent reduction in pull request cycle time within its own environment.
