Microsoft's Rapid-Deploy Container Apps Express Exits Preview Powered by Sandbox Isolation Layer
Azure Container Apps Express and its underlying Sandboxes layer are now production-ready, eliminating provisioning friction for developers while offering subsecond startup and hardware-isolated compute for agent workloads.
InfoQ
Microsoft has announced general availability for Azure Container Apps Express, a deployment model designed to strip away infrastructure configuration and let developers focus on code. Running on top of the newly GA Azure Container Apps Sandboxes layer, Express aims to accelerate development cycles by automating provisioning, scaling, and cost management.
Streamlined Deployment for Developers and Agents#
Express transforms container deployment into a minimal workflow: provide a container image, specify a region, and the platform handles the rest. Workloads consume CPU on a per-second billing model, scale automatically to zero during idle periods, and incur no environment setup fees. Microsoft positions the service for both human developers and AI agents, making the latter appeal explicit: autonomous systems can provision and update applications far faster than manual infrastructure configuration allows.
Underneath, Express runs on Sandboxes, a hardware-isolated compute primitive that provisions workloads from prewarmed pools with subsecond startup times. Each sandbox runs in its own microVM boundary and can scale to thousands of concurrent instances. A standout feature is snapshot-based suspend and resume—workloads freeze to disk including memory and CPU state, then restore in under a second when needed again.
Two Entry Points to the Same Architecture#
Developers can use Sandboxes as a direct primitive for agent platforms and secure code-execution services, rather than going through Express's opinionated defaults. The top-level resource is Microsoft.App/SandboxGroups, which acts as a management boundary for related sandboxes, analogous to a Container Apps environment.
This design mirrors Google's pairing of GKE Pod snapshots with GKE Agent Sandbox—both vendors are solving the same problem: how to give untrusted or temporary workloads an isolated, ephemeral compute environment that costs nothing while dormant and starts in milliseconds.
What Express Includes and Excludes#
Express bundles a focused set of Container Apps features:
- Scale to zero with automatic scaling based on HTTP, CPU, or memory
- Multiple replicas and HTTP ingress on a managed Microsoft domain
