Meta AI evolves into personal assistant with calendar planning and research tools
Meta's latest AI upgrade adds productivity features like calendar management and web research, marking a shift toward competing directly with OpenAI and Google in the assistant space.
The Verge
Meta has rolled out significant enhancements to its AI chatbot, introducing capabilities that position it more directly as a personal assistant rather than just a conversational tool. The expansion includes features for event planning, daily summaries, and guided web research—areas that bring Meta into closer competition with Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude.
What's New#
The updated Meta AI can now integrate with your calendar to generate personalized daily briefings and assist with scheduling decisions. Beyond that, it can search for restaurants aligned with your plans, browse Facebook Marketplace for secondhand items matching your renovation budget, and help you research topics while letting you steer its direction mid-response. The update runs on Meta's newly released Muse Spark 1.1 model, which the company says empowers the chatbot to act on tasks rather than simply answering questions.
Meta also introduced automation capabilities: configure a task once, and the assistant handles it ongoing—think recurring meal plans or alerts when products restock. The chatbot can now summarize and synthesize information from across the web into structured reports or presentations.
A Strategic Reversal#
This move represents a notable shift in Meta's approach. Last year, chief product officer Chris Cox told staff the company would "focus on entertainment" and "connection with friends" rather than chase productivity features the way rivals do. That stance has now reversed, with Meta's blog describing the upgrade as the "next step toward personal superintelligence"—language CEO Mark Zuckerberg has championed as the future of AI development.
Rollout and Availability#
The new features are launching today in select markets within the Meta AI app and on the web. The company plans to expand access across additional countries and to platforms including WhatsApp over the coming weeks.
