Google brings voice chat to Gmail, Docs, and Keep with Gemini-powered assistants
New conversational AI features let you manage Google's productivity apps hands-free, from finding emails to transcribing notes by speaking naturally.
The Verge
Google is expanding its Gemini AI assistant into three core productivity apps with real-time voice conversation modes that let you interact with Gmail, Docs, and Keep by talking to them. The rollout of Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live brings the same conversational abilities of Gemini Live to these individual apps, designed to support mobile users who need quick, hands-free access to their information.

How each feature works#
Gmail Live extracts key details from your email inbox through natural conversation. Instead of searching through threads manually, you can ask questions like "when is my kid's next school event?" and the assistant pulls the relevant message, summarizes it verbally, and links the original email in the transcript. You can continue the conversation without restarting, or interrupt the assistant mid-response to shift topics.
Docs Live transforms spoken descriptions into formatted documents. You can ask it to summarize existing files, restructure them into proposals, or create new documents from conversational prompts. When permitted, it accesses Gmail, Drive, Chat, and web sources to tailor responses to your needs.
Keep Live transcribes natural speech into organized notes. The AI contextualizes what you say without requiring precise phrasing—you can simply ask it to add "ingredients for pesto" to a shopping list, and it understands the intent without explicit instructions.
Availability and rollout#
These capabilities debuted as previews at Google I/O in May and are now rolling out to mobile devices worldwide in English. Access depends on subscription tier and platform:
- Gmail Live: iOS and Android for Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers
- Docs Live: AI Pro and Ultra plans on both iOS and Android
- Keep Live: AI Pro and Ultra plans on Android only
All three features are arriving for Workspace business customers in the coming weeks.
