Java's Latest: TornadoVM 6.0 Replaces JNI, New Releases in JReleaser, LangChain4j, More
The Java ecosystem sees significant updates this week, headlined by TornadoVM's shift to the Foreign Function & Memory API and point releases across multiple frameworks and tools.
InfoQ
The Java community released a slate of updates this week, with particular attention on GPU acceleration and language tooling. Here's what emerged in the past few days.
JDK Progress#
Both future Java releases received incremental builds. JDK 27 is now at Build 35, while JDK 28 reached Build 14 with various bug fixes. Developers are urged to file issues through the Java Bug Database as these versions move toward release.
TornadoVM's API Modernization#
TornadoVM 6.0.0 marked a significant architectural shift. The GPU acceleration library ditched the legacy Java Native Interface, replacing it with Java's newer Foreign Function & Memory API. The team also removed dependency on the experimental JVM Compiler Interface, instead using "sourcing all compiler metadata through a reflection + ASM + Unsafe layer, and makes that the single, uniform path on every supported JDK (21, 25, 26, 27)." CUDA backend capabilities expanded with this release. Full details appear in the release notes.
Framework & SDK Updates#
Micronaut and GraalVM Development Kit moved in lockstep: Micronaut Framework 5.1.3 brought patches to eight modules including SQL libraries, observability, and AWS integrations. Oracle Labs released GDK 5.1.3 in parallel, adding support for building apps with JDK 25 through the GDK Launcher and CLI. The GDK now provides curated Micronaut components for faster cloud development.
JReleaser (1.26.0) enhanced Snapcraft support with new platform configuration options and added a way to skip JBang repository tagging. See the release notes for details.
LangChain4j (1.20.0) introduced experimental reactive and non-blocking support for AI service methods via CompletableFuture and Flow.Publisher, plus opt-in Jackson 3 JSON SPIs. Details are in the .
