Spotify Adds AI Chatbot for Personalized Music Discovery and Listening Insights
Premium subscribers can now chat with Spotify's AI assistant to search for music, explore recommendations, and review their own listening history.
The Verge
Spotify is rolling out a conversational AI chatbot feature that lets Premium subscribers interact with the platform through natural dialogue. The "Talk to Spotify" tool appears on both the Home and Now Playing screens in Spotify's mobile app, and users can issue commands either by typing or using voice input.
How the Feature Works#
The chatbot integrates with your personal listening profile, drawing on your saved playlists, favorite artists, play history, and listening patterns. This means you can ask questions about your own music habits—such as discovering when you first encountered a particular track or identifying which genres you've been gravitating toward lately. Beyond playback control, the AI responds to more sophisticated requests like "play something I haven't discovered yet" followed by refining instructions such as specifying artists or adjusting the energy level.
Broader AI Capabilities#
The system extends beyond music recommendations. Users can pose general knowledge questions about what they're listening to: release dates for songs, an author's complete bibliography when exploring audiobooks, or a podcast guest's appearances on other shows in Spotify's catalog. This approach mirrors the flexibility of broader AI services like Google's Gemini or ChatGPT, though tailored to Spotify's content ecosystem.
Where It Stands#
Amazon Music introduced a comparable feature the previous year by embedding Alexa Plus into its platform. Spotify's version represents a step forward by personalizing responses through user data and enabling more fluid back-and-forth dialogue compared to earlier tools like Prompted Playlist, which generated playlists from typed descriptions.
The beta rollout is gradually expanding among Premium users aged 18 and older in the United States, Ireland, and Sweden, accessible on both iOS and Android in English. Spotify acknowledges the feature remains under development and that responses may occasionally miss the mark.
