Meta launches Muse Image, its free AI picture generator
The social media giant's new creative tool, built by its in-house AI lab, is rolling out across Meta AI, Instagram, and WhatsApp at no cost.
TechCrunch — AI
Meta has launched Muse Image, a fresh addition to its growing suite of artificial intelligence tools. Built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company's internal AI division, the system lets users generate original images through text prompts and editing capabilities.
How it works#
The tool functions much like competing image generators. Users can type a description of what they want and receive a visual creation—ranging from whimsical cartoons to realistic compositions. For those struggling to imagine what to create, Muse includes pre-loaded prompt templates designed to jumpstart creativity.
The system also handles prompt-based editing, allowing users to refine existing images by describing changes they'd like. Examples include superimposing yourself into a famous monument, removing unwanted people from photos, or generating functional QR codes embedded into custom artwork.
Where you can find it#
Starting now, Muse is accessible through:
- The Meta AI app
- Instagram Stories (with newly integrated AI effects)
Meta is positioning the tool as free for routine creative work, though heavy users will eventually hit a ceiling and need to subscribe to one of the company's premium tiers.
Practical applications#
Meta is emphasizing real-world uses beyond pure art. The system can help sellers craft custom product photos for Facebook Marketplace, assist in visualizing interior design changes (like previewing how a secondhand couch might fit in a room), and generate ads tailored to specific campaigns.
Looking ahead#
The company also signaled that Muse Video—presumably a complementary AI video creation tool—is already being developed. Meta has been rapidly building out its AI product ecosystem this year, having previously launched a Creator assistant and Pocket, a video game development app. Despite occasional criticism over the clarity of its broader AI vision, the company continues investing heavily in AI infrastructure and capability-building.
