Agentic AI
Researchers Propose KISS Sorcar, a Lightweight AI Agent Framework for Long-Horizon Engineering Tasks
An open-source framework built on 2,900 lines of code addresses persistent challenges in deploying language models for sustained software engineering work.
Language models have grown adept at generating code and orchestrating tools, yet significant hurdles remain when trying to deploy them for sustained engineering tasks: context windows run out, single errors can collapse entire workflows, agents reach dead ends, and reviewing or rolling back AI-generated modifications remains cumbersome.
The Core Problem#
Researchers have identified a cluster of persistent gaps that prevent large language models from functioning reliably as practical assistants for extended software engineering and AI discovery projects. These challenges include limited context capacity, the brittleness of long-running sessions when mistakes occur, agents becoming trapped in unproductive states, and the practical difficulty of understanding and reverting changes that an AI system produces.
KISS Sorcar's Architecture#
The proposed solution, KISS Sorcar, is an open-source agent system that combines general-purpose AI capabilities with an integrated development environment. Built atop the KISS Agent Framework—which comprises roughly 2,900 lines of core code—the system uses a hierarchical five-layer design where each layer introduces a single responsibility:
- Budget-tracked execution using ReAct principles to manage token and computational resources
- Automatic session recovery through summarization that allows the agent to continue across interruptions
- Parallel execution of coding and browser tools via sub-agents
- Persistent multi-turn dialogue with history retrieval to maintain context across interactions
- Git worktree isolation ensuring each task operates independently on its own branch
Engineering Principles at the Core#
Rather than relying solely on the base model's capabilities, the framework encodes software engineering best practices directly into the agent's system prompt. This design philosophy prioritizes simplicity and explainability, allowing the agent to operate within well-defined constraints while maintaining transparency about its operations.
The work was submitted to arXiv in April 2026 and revised in June of that year.
