The AI chatbot has become Google's 14th product to hit the billion-user milestone, driven by rapid adoption across mobile and web platforms.

Google's Gemini AI assistant has joined an exclusive club, reaching 1 billion monthly active users—a milestone CEO Sundar Pichai announced this week. The achievement marks the company's 14th product to cross this threshold and puts Gemini on par with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which hit the same figure in June.
Broad integration driving adoption#
The rapid expansion reflects Google's strategy of embedding Gemini throughout its ecosystem. The chatbot is now available through Search, Workspace tools, Android devices, and its own standalone app. Google's AI Mode in Search alone serves over 1 billion monthly active users, though today's figure specifically measures the Gemini app independent of these other channels. The company has also maintained a significant presence on iOS, with more than 100 million active users on Apple's platform.
Usage patterns and feature growth#
User engagement is climbing alongside the headline numbers. Nearly two-thirds of Gemini users rely on the voice feature to interact with the assistant, and the service now generates more than 150 million images daily. Google continues rolling out new capabilities, including the Gemini 3.5 Flash model, which the company designed to strengthen autonomous AI agents and code-generation tasks.
Context and momentum#
The milestone announcement arrives shortly after Google's Q2 2026 earnings call, when the company reported 950 million monthly users and a threefold increase in daily active users over the past year. The timing also precedes Google's Made by Google event, where new Gemini-powered features for Pixel devices are expected to debut.
