Qualcomm debuts AI-powered smartphone chips with on-device model support
The new Snapdragon processors bring advanced AI capabilities directly to phones, enabling everything from personal scribes to professional-grade video.
TechCrunch — AI
Qualcomm unveiled two new flagship mobile processors aimed at bringing sophisticated AI functionality to smartphones. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and its high-performance variant, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, both prioritize on-device machine learning and AI-powered features that promise enhanced personalization without relying on cloud infrastructure.
Local AI Models and Personal Assistants#
The chips incorporate redesigned sensing hubs capable of running compact AI models up to 200 million parameters. These modules enable smartphones to execute personal assistant tasks entirely on-device, including voice transcription and speaker differentiation. The system can also learn from user patterns to suggest task automation opportunities. Notably, the processors support complete voice-activated agents that accept spoken input and deliver spoken responses—all processed locally.
The Extreme variant pushes further by running a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts (MoE) model directly on the device. This architecture only activates the specific parameters needed for each task, making the system more power-efficient than loading an entire 30-billion-parameter model. By comparison, Apple unveiled a 20-billion-parameter MoE model as part of its third-generation foundation models suite at WWDC in June.
Camera and Video Enhancements#
The new processors deliver pixel-level camera control designed for professional-grade photography and videography. Both chips include improved motion tracking and image stabilization. The Extreme version steps further with support for 8K video capture at 60 frames per second and ultra-slow-motion 4K recording at 240 fps. It also introduces Qualcomm's Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec for creators requiring publication-ready footage from their phones.
Audio and Voice Features#
AI enhancements extend to audio processing, with both chips capable of isolating and amplifying voice while suppressing background noise during calls. Qualcomm's new voice bubble technology creates distinct audio zones, helping separate a user's voice from surrounding ambient sound for clearer communication.
Market Adoption#
Motorola announced plans to release the Motorola Signature 27, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 variant, later this year. Though Qualcomm has , industry figures including Nothing co-founder Carl Pei and Apple's new CEO John Ternus have suggested that consumers will continue choosing smartphones as their primary AI platform.
