Apple has long been expected to enter the smart display market with a device that brings a screen to its HomePod line. Fresh reporting now suggests the company could unveil this long-awaited product as soon as October, marking a significant expansion into the competitive home hub space.
What the device is rumored to offer#
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that the upcoming hub will feature a 7-inch square display paired with a custom operating system derived from tvOS. The interface is said to present grids of icons, widgets, and apps in a style reminiscent of iOS and watchOS.
The device would be built around Apple's overhauled Siri AI system and would handle video calling, home security monitoring, and intercom functionality to communicate across other Apple Home products. A notable feature involves the display automatically adapting its appearance—adjusting text and icon sizes—based on who is viewing the screen.
Timing and the broader home strategy#
Originally slated for spring 2025, Apple postponed the announcement when the company delayed its upgraded Siri release. The timeline now aligns with the arrival of iOS 27 and the new AI-powered assistant in September.
The smart display is just one part of a larger initiative to strengthen Apple's foothold in smart home technology, an area where the company has historically depended on third-party partners. The portfolio is expected to expand with a premium security camera system (to rival Amazon's Ring), a refreshed Apple TV box, and an updated HomePod mini. Further out, Apple may introduce a robotic arm with an integrated screen.
Gurman notes that delays remain possible, but he anticipates an announcement window between October and early 2026.
