Agentic AI
Google's Tunix brings high-performance agentic RL training to JAX and TPU ecosystems
Google's post-training library Tunix solves infrastructure bottlenecks in training complex reasoning agents by keeping accelerators fully utilized through asynchronous rollouts and dynamic pipelining.

Training large language models has evolved beyond static alignment into dynamic multi-turn reasoning workflows where agents execute code, call APIs, and interact with external environments. This shift creates significant performance challenges: when an agent pauses for tool execution or network I/O, expensive accelerators like TPUs sit idle, wasting computational capacity.
Google has released Tunix, a post-training library designed to eliminate these bottlenecks and enable efficient agentic reinforcement learning (RL) at scale. The framework targets the JAX/TPU ecosystem, offering native support for Pathways distributed training and XLA compiler optimizations.
Solving accelerator idle time#
Tunix addresses the core efficiency problem through two complementary approaches:
-
Asynchronous Trajectory Collector Engine: Using Python's
asyncio, Tunix manages high-concurrency pools of agent-environment interactions. When one agent pauses for a tool call, the inference engine immediately pivots to generate tokens for other active trajectories. Integration with inference engines like vLLM-TPU and SGLang-Jax enables non-blocking sampling and maximum TPU concurrency. -
Barrier-Free Pipelining: Rather than forcing the trainer to wait until an entire batch of trajectories completes, Tunix decouples rollout and training into a continuous producer-consumer pipeline. The async rollout orchestrator continuously yields completed trajectories into a high-throughput queue, while the training module dynamically groups variable-length trajectories and streams them directly to the trainer as they become available.
Flexible, composable environment integration#
A common friction point in RL frameworks is the rigid coupling between algorithm and environment, requiring substantial rewrites to support new benchmarks or custom systems. Tunix provides a clean API boundary that automates lifecycle management:
-
Agent Layer: Handles prompt formatting, action generation, and conversation histories. Developers can customize generation logic by subclassing
ConversationAgentBase. -
Environment Layer: Built-in
TaskEnvironmentandToolEnvironmentclasses cover common cases, with the option to inherit fromBaseTaskEnvfor custom integrations. Tunix manages multi-turn episode lifecycles and reward processing automatically.
