Midjourney Acquires Astrology App Co-Star, Moves Into App Development
The AI image generation company has snapped up the personalized horoscope app and tapped its founder to lead product design for Midjourney's upcoming mobile offerings.
The Verge
Midjourney, the AI firm known for creating images and recently venturing into medical imaging, is now stepping into the astrology space through its acquisition of Co-Star, a personalized horoscope platform. The deal, which closed in spring, marks Midjourney's first major acquisition and signals a shift toward building consumer-facing applications beyond its web and Discord interfaces.
What Co-Star Does#
Co-Star is a free-to-use app that blends NASA data, human expertise, and artificial intelligence to provide users with daily astrological insights. The platform also lets people assess relationship compatibility with friends, positioning itself as a science-meets-mysticism approach to astrology rather than pure entertainment.
Leadership Transition and New Direction#
Co-Star founder Banu Guler will maintain operational control of the astrology app while assuming a broader role as Midjourney's chief design officer. According to Bloomberg's reporting, Guler and her team will now guide Midjourney's entry into dedicated applications—including a standalone image generation tool. Midjourney founder David Holz emphasized that this move represents the company's first serious push into standalone products, moving beyond the current web and Discord-based model.
Strategic Reasoning#
The acquisition reflects Midjourney's ambition to expand its user base and distribution channels. By recruiting an experienced founder who has built a successful app with millions of users, the company gains both talent and proven product expertise to launch its own suite of applications.
