Amazon AI now verifies whether messages are genuine or phishing scams
Alexa for Shopping can now authenticate Amazon communications, helping customers distinguish legitimate messages from fraudulent ones.
TechCrunch — AI
Amazon has rolled out a new AI-powered tool to combat message fraud, addressing a widespread problem that drives hundreds of thousands of customers annually to its support team seeking verification of suspicious communications.
How it works#
The technology, integrated into Alexa for Shopping, cross-references incoming messages against Amazon's vast database of billions of legitimate communications sent worldwide. The system scrutinizes multiple dimensions of each message—sender identity, message content, timing patterns, and metadata—to establish whether it originated from Amazon's systems or represents a phishing attempt. According to Amazon, the AI becomes progressively more effective as users flag questionable messages, strengthening its detection capabilities over time.
Tackling a growing problem#
Scammers have crafted increasingly convincing forgeries targeting Amazon customers, including fabricated order confirmations, counterfeit Prime renewal notices, fake account suspension alerts, and misleading job opportunity pitches. Beyond the new Alexa feature, Amazon previously launched a dedicated email address, verify@amazon.com, allowing customers to submit suspicious messages for manual review, along with an online verification form accessible through its customer service portal.
Broader shopping assistant expansion#
The message verification capability represents part of a larger strategic pivot for Alexa, repositioning the voice assistant as a shopping-focused companion. Today's version can surface personalized discounts, generate curated buying guides, streamline reorders, deliver AI-generated product summaries, and convert handwritten lists into digital shopping collections. The company recently added alert functionality that notifies users when anticipated releases arrive—new brand offerings, book launches, or music drops from followed artists.
Customers can access Alexa for Shopping through Amazon's website and mobile application.
