CodexGraph: LLMs Meet Code Repositories Through Graph Database Queries
Researchers propose a new system that lets AI agents navigate and understand entire codebases by querying graph-based representations of code structure.
Large language models have demonstrated strong capabilities when working with isolated coding problems, but they face significant hurdles when tasked with understanding or reasoning about full software repositories. A new research effort called CodexGraph attempts to bridge this gap by equipping LLM agents with a structured interface to explore code at scale.
The Problem with Current Approaches#
Existing strategies for connecting LLMs to code repositories typically fall into two categories, each with distinct limitations. Similarity-based retrieval methods—which fetch relevant code by comparing it to a query—tend to miss important context in complex scenarios. Meanwhile, manual tooling and API-based solutions demand specialist knowledge and are often tailored to specific tasks, making them difficult to adapt across different coding problems or real-world use cases.
CodexGraph's Solution#
The new system integrates LLM agents with graph database interfaces built from code repositories. By representing code structure as a queryable graph, CodexGraph allows agents to formulate and run precise queries that retrieve context based on code architecture rather than simple text similarity. This enables more intelligent navigation through large codebases and better awareness of how different components relate to one another.
Evaluation and Real-World Testing#
The researchers evaluated CodexGraph using three academic benchmarks—CrossCodeEval, SWE-bench, and EvoCodeBench—as well as five custom applications designed to test its utility in practical scenarios. The unified graph database schema demonstrated competitive performance across both research settings and applied use cases, suggesting promise for handling diverse software engineering challenges. An interactive demo is available through the project's public repository.
Why It Matters#
This work addresses a critical bottleneck in AI-assisted development: making large code repositories accessible to language models in a structured, intelligent way. By enabling agents to query code graphs rather than relying on keyword matching or hand-crafted tools, CodexGraph points toward more flexible, general-purpose systems for code understanding and software engineering at scale.
