iPhone 18 Pro brings variable-aperture camera and A20 chip to Apple's flagship line
Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max with variable-aperture camera technology, a new A20 Pro processor, and extended battery life.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its Wednesday event, introducing a lineup that emphasizes computational photography and thermal efficiency. Both models arrive in four finishes—deep black, silver, glacier, and burgundy—paired with color-matched rear glass.
Camera innovations lead the update#
The most significant upgrade centers on the main camera, which now features a variable aperture with six blades thinner than a human hair. This adaptive lens design automatically widens in low-light conditions to capture more light, enabling faster night-mode shots with improved detail. The camera also shoots at 48 megapixels and now supports 4K time-lapse video in Dolby Vision HDR.
Professional photographers and videographers gain expanded manual controls over both stills and video, allowing adjustments to shutter speed and motion-blur effects. Apple's photographic styles tool now includes fine-tuned texture and grain options, while the phones will support both Google's SynthID content authenticity system and a new Apple-developed reference image standard.
A20 Pro processor and thermal management#
The new A20 Pro processor is built on a 2-nanometer process matching Apple's latest M6 chips. It houses a six-core CPU split between two high-performance "desktop-class" cores and four efficiency cores, plus a seven-core GPU that delivers a claimed 40-percent performance boost. To handle the processing demands, Apple enlarged the vapor chamber to triple the surface area of its iPhone 17 Pro predecessor, enabling more effective heat dissipation.
Battery life extends significantly#
The thermal improvements translate to battery gains. The iPhone 18 Pro achieves all-day endurance comparable to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, with 36 hours of video playback. The Pro Max pushes that further to 45 hours. A rapid-charging feature delivers enough power for six hours of video playback in just 15 minutes of wired charging.
AI and display refinements#
Both devices deepen Apple's integration with and the updated , which now features more expressive voice options. The Dynamic Island shrinks while gaining capacity to display three Live Activities simultaneously.
