Mystery AI Model Ox Alpha Sparks Wild Speculation Over Its True Origins
A newly released reasoning model cloaked in anonymity has set off internet-wide guessing games about which lab actually created it.
TechCrunch — AI
An unidentified artificial intelligence model called Ox Alpha has ignited a wave of online detective work, with observers scrambling to pinpoint its actual developer.
The model became available for free through OpenRouter on Thursday, billed as "a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workload." Stripe's chief executive, Patrick Collison—whose payments company is currently in the process of acquiring OpenRouter—publicly praised it as "very impressive."
The Anonymous Attribution Problem#
OpenRouter's official description labels Ox Alpha as a "stealth model" and notes it comes from "a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview." This deliberate vagueness has only fueled the rumor mill.
Theories Pointing in Multiple Directions#
Speculation has homed in on several possibilities, with Chinese AI labs receiving particular attention. Analyst Andrew Curran noted on social media Friday that initial theories circled around the GLM family of models developed by Chinese company Z.ai, though confidence in that assessment began wavering as more analysis emerged.
Competing theories have since cropped up:
- Some analysts floated the possibility that Ox Alpha represents an unreleased variant of Microsoft's MAI model
- Reddit communities remain divided, with threads expressing certainty it's Chinese clashing with posts declaring it cannot be
- Initial reporting by tech outlets has evolved as new clues surface, with hypotheses shifting as observers weigh the evidence
