Rabbit Launches Cloud-Based AI Agent That Works Without Its Hardware
The startup behind the poorly received R1 device is now offering OS3, an AI operating system available on multiple platforms without requiring proprietary hardware.
The Verge
Rabbit is moving beyond its underwhelming R1 gadget by introducing OS3, a cloud-powered AI agent that operates independently of the company's hardware. The system runs natively on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers while maintaining cloud connectivity for processing.
How OS3 Works#
Users can register up to five devices to a single account and connect their choice of AI models. The OS3 system intelligently assesses which devices, files, applications, and AI models are required for each task, then coordinates them automatically. The platform is accessible via its own web interface, through familiar messaging services like Telegram or iMessage, and on Rabbit's R1 device itself.
Rabbit's Hardware Pivot#
Founder Jesse Lyu confirmed to Wired that Rabbit has halted manufacturing of the R1, but isn't abandoning the physical device market entirely. Instead, the company plans to release a new "cyberdeck" device built on vibe-coding principles that will run OS3 when it arrives within the coming months.
Privacy Considerations#
Rabbit states that OS3 will not retain, duplicate, monetize, or trade your personal information. However, the company will preserve conversation histories and related data points on its infrastructure. Any third-party AI services connected to OS3 will apply their own privacy standards to user data handled through those integrations.
