Venice AI Hits Unicorn Status on $65M Series A, Betting Privacy Beats Guardrails
The privacy-focused AI platform reached a $1 billion valuation by offering unrestricted access to 200+ models with encrypted inputs, positioning itself as an antidote to safety-conscious competitors.

Venice AI, a startup offering privacy-shielded access to over 200 AI models, has become a unicorn after closing a $65 million Series A at a $1 billion valuation—the company's first outside fundraise. Crypto-focused venture firm Dragonfly led the round, joined by Coinbase Ventures and North Island Ventures.
The move reflects investor appetite for an AI platform that explicitly rejects the content moderation guardrails now standard at OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Just two years old, Venice already processes 1.7 million API calls daily across more than 3 million active users and generated over $70 million in annualized run-rate revenues.
How Venice's Privacy Model Works#
The platform hosts "uncensored" open-source models on its own infrastructure while routing requests for closed-source systems like ChatGPT through external proxies. All user inputs are encrypted end-to-end before reaching Venice's servers, and no query data is stored internally. Advanced privacy features—including full end-to-end encryption—require a paid subscription.
The Unrestricted Alternative#
Venice's positioning directly challenges the current AI safety consensus. The company allows users to choose from models that vary widely in performance, quality, and the degree of censorship they apply. Founder Erik Voorhees framed the approach as defending user autonomy against what he views as overreaching surveillance, invoking Bitcoin's neutral-protocol design as a parallel.
"We're optimizing for freedom and actually respecting users as adults," Voorhees said in an interview. When asked about risks including documented cases of AI-driven psychosis, he described Venice as offering a "neutral tool" that avoids the danger of a "constantly watched" world.
Crypto Ties and Token Economics#
Voorhees, an early Bitcoin advocate who previously founded the cryptocurrency exchange ShapeShift and gambling platform Satoshi Dice, brings deep crypto credentials to the venture. Venice launched its own token, VVV, in January, with users able to stake it to earn DIEM tokens—each worth $1 in daily AI credits. Despite the crypto focus, only about 8% of users pay with cryptocurrency.
Growth Drivers and Next Steps#
Voorhees credited token performance for early momentum but pointed to feature parity with ChatGPT as the decisive factor in recent growth. As Venice closed the capability gap with market leader OpenAI, it became a more compelling privacy-preserving alternative. The company plans to deploy fresh capital toward building its own GPU infrastructure and data centers, reducing reliance on leased compute and lifting gross margins.
