Meta Lets AI Agents Automate WhatsApp Business Setup
Meta has released a new Model Context Protocol server that lets developers ask their AI agent to handle the tedious work of configuring WhatsApp Business messaging.
TechCrunch — AI
Meta has launched a new tool to simplify how developers get businesses onto WhatsApp Business, its customer messaging platform. Rather than manually navigating multiple interfaces, developers can now instruct their preferred AI agent—such as Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT—to handle the entire setup process through conversation.
How It Works#
The enabler is WhatsApp Business Tools MCP (Model Context Protocol), a server that connects coding-focused AI agents directly to Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform. This lets the AI agent automate routine administrative tasks without requiring developers to juggle the Developer Console, Business Manager, API documentation, and their code editor.
What the AI Agent Can Do#
Once set up, the AI can tackle several categories of work:
- Account setup: creating the WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying the company's phone number, registering for Cloud API access
- Template management: drafting new messaging templates based on a business description or editing existing ones
- Testing and monitoring: validating messages, webhooks, Terms of Service compliance, payment methods, and business verification status
Meta's existing Meta Social Technologies MCP can also run alongside the new tool to help discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot problems during configuration.
Broader MCP Ecosystem#
This move reflects Meta's broader integration of the Model Context Protocol standard, which now underpins several of its tools for managing ads, monitoring app configurations, and handling social platforms. The same pattern has emerged across the tech industry—PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Google, Microsoft, X, and others all now offer MCP servers to let AI agents securely access their services.
