OpenAI removes text-chat limits for free ChatGPT users
Starting next week, free and Go tier subscribers will enjoy unlimited text conversations with no rate restrictions.
The Verge
OpenAI is rolling out a significant expansion to its free tier offering: beginning next week, users on the free and Go plans will no longer face rate limits on text-only conversations with ChatGPT. The change applies exclusively to plain text exchanges; chats involving file uploads or images will continue to operate under existing restrictions.
Free-tier model upgrades#
This week, OpenAI is simultaneously upgrading the default AI model powering free and Go users to GPT-5.6 Luna. The company is also introducing a new "Think" button that allows users on those tiers to access deeper reasoning capabilities for complex questions.
Improvements for paid subscribers#
Paying customers on Plus and Pro plans are receiving updates to the GPT-5.6 Sol model, now engineered to minimize factual errors. The improved version handles date-sensitive, numerical, and source-dependent queries more accurately by better leveraging information it retrieves. OpenAI highlights that responses will be "more direct" with refined formatting and reduced unnecessary elaboration.
Additionally, Plus and Pro users gain access to a new adjustment slider that lets them control the depth of reasoning ChatGPT applies to each answer. These enhancements become available starting Thursday.
