Agentic AI
AWS launches native iOS app for Kiro agentic coding platform
Developers can now monitor, steer, and approve AI-driven code generation sessions from their phones without a laptop, with compute continuing in AWS's cloud backend.
The New Stack
AWS has released a native iOS application for Kiro, its AI-powered development environment announced at the AWS New York Summit. The app enables developers to manage autonomous coding sessions remotely—starting sessions, reviewing code diffs, and approving changes directly from their iPhones while compute runs in the cloud.
Managing agents, not just code#
The mobile release reflects a shift in how AWS frames agentic development. Rather than optimizing for code generation speed, the focus has moved to agent supervision. As Darko Mesaros, Principal Developer Advocate for Kiro at AWS, explained in The New Stack interview: "The bottleneck moves from writing code to managing the agents doing the writing."
Sessions started on the web automatically surface in the mobile app with preserved context—same identity, model preferences, and connected repositories. Diffs display as native red and green cards optimized for small screens, with PR and code review status visible on each session row.
Three session modes#
The app supports the same three workflows as Kiro Web:
- Chat: Quick interactive queries
- Spec: Requirements-driven development
- Autonomous: Fully delegated tasks with agent pause points when developer input is needed
Spec-driven development as a safeguard#
Kiro's spec-driven workflow—which generates requirements documents, design specs, and task lists before writing code—launches simultaneously on the web. Mesaros frames it as addressing "AI coding slop" by establishing "a contract between the agent and the developer."
AWS noted that roughly 80% of its own software engineers use Kiro, with spec-driven practices built into that usage.
Availability and limitations#
Kiro Mobile is in preview on iOS 16+ for Pro, Pro+, Pro Max, and Power subscribers, with sign-in via Google, GitHub, IAM, or AWS Builder ID. Android support is not currently planned; AWS cited developer GitHub issues and Discord requests as the basis for iOS prioritization.
